Making Marmalade

Making Marmalade, an original painting by Philomena Harmsworth

Washing, chopping, squeezing, slicing, depithing, bagging, boiling, all on an old wooden board, and into a big old pan. This lengthy process with these surprisingly beautiful jewels of sunshine, the Seville orange, was a glorious way to spend a cold January day snug indoors with my adventurous generous aunt. We talked as old friends and her indulgence in salty stories are always a wave of comfort and fun. The result was bitter, caramelised, warm and buttery and glowing golden in beautiful rows of glass jars in an all-encompassing aroma of Marmalade.

The original painting has sold. There are Limited Edition Artist’s Prints available here.
